Why Criteria Harmonization?
Simply put, by creating common language, it reduces confusion for institutions that are being visited by multiple commissions. It simplifies training for ABET volunteers who must now learn different commission nuances. And it increases efficiencies by eliminating duplicate efforts, forms, and processes.
Leading the Criteria Harmonization effort are the four ABET commissions—ASAC, CAC, EAC, and TAC—coordinated by the Accreditation Council. All four Criteria Committees are directly involved in the work as well. ABET's Board of Directors approved a two-year reading to allow time for public comment and implementation. If approved, the changes will be effective for the 2011-2012 visit cycle.
The "readers' guides" below explain the changes for each commission's criteria, comparing the 2009 criteria with the proposed criteria.
